Good afternoon, and welcome to PI. Keep those tips coming: tmeyer@politico.com and mlevine@politico.com. You can also follow us on Twitter: @marianne_levine and @theodoricmeyer.

POSTCARD FROM DAVOS: Key leaders and thinkers from around the world have converged at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and POLITICO is providing up-to-the-minute dispatches through our exclusive Davos Playbook (sign up here) and a pop-up Davos Confidential podcast (sign up here) to help track significant conversations, newsworthy events and the general buzz from the scene at #WEF2018.

WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN: It’s official: The first year of Donald Trump’s presidency was good for K Street. Eighteen of the top 20 lobbying firms in town saw their revenue rise last year, and many saw significant bumps. Covington & Burling, for instance, brought in $17.8 million in lobbying revenue in 2017 — an increase of more than 40 percent over the $12.6 million the firm billed in 2016. TheAmerican Continental Group, which is home to Dave Urban, who played a critical role in helping Trump win Pennsylvania, saw its revenue spike, too. And Ballard Partners, the Florida lobbying firm run by Brian Ballard, who was a top fundraiser for Trump’s campaign, saw nearly $10 million in lobbying revenue after setting up shop in Washington last year. (One of the firms that saw a falloff in business was the Podesta Group, which imploded after Tony Podesta stepped down as chairman but brought in more lobbying revenue than all but eight other firms in the year overall.)

Elizabeth Gore, who leads Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s government relations department, identified three areas that had driven business during Trump’s first year in office: the battles over repealing Obamacare and reforming the tax code, as well as the surge of nervous companies hiring lobbyists that accompanies the first months of most administrations. For all the uncertainty that has accompanied Trump’s first year in office, Gore said, “K Street found that really it wasn’t as different as maybe we thought it would be.”

INSIDE THE FILINGS: The National Association of Realtors shelled out more on lobbying than any other trade group or company in the fourth quarter as it fought back against proposals that would reduce the value of the mortgage interest deduction as part of tax reform. The Realtors spent $22.2 million in the fourth quarter and $54.4 million in 2017 overall. The Business Roundtable’s spending also soared. The trade group spent $17.4 million on lobbying in the fourth quarter — more than four times what it spent in the fourth quarter of 2016 — and $27.4 million over the full year.

NEW BUSINESS: Forbes Tate Partners has signed Deloitte, lobbying on accounting, financial services, tax and appropriations issues. And Raytheon has added Rasky Partners to its stable of Washington lobbying firms. Raytheon also retains more than a dozen other lobbying shops, including BGR GroupCapitol Tax Partners and Holland & Knight.

TECH GIANTS SAY GOODBYE TO OUTSIDE LOBBYING FIRMS: Several tech companies severed ties with outside lobbying firms, according to their fourth quarter disclosures. POLITICO’s Steven Overly reports that “Yelp parted ways with Monument Policy Group at the end of the year, after paying the firm $50,000 last quarter”; “Netflix is no longer working with the Glover Park Group”; “Comcast, Cox Enterprises and NCTA have separated from Palmetto Group”; “TripAdvisor terminated Epplin Strategic Planning”; and “Adobesevered ties with West Front Strategies.” Full story.

SOLAR INDUSTRY TRADE ASSOCIATION BLASTS TARIFF RULING: The Solar Energy Industry Association blasted the Trump administration’s decision Monday to impose new tariffs on imports of solar panels and cells, POLITICO’s Eric Wolff reports. The decision came after two solar companies — Suniva and SolarWorld USA — filed a trade complaint. Abigail Ross Hopper, president and chief executive of SEIA, said in a written statement that the new tariffs “will create a crisis in a part of our economy that has been thriving, which will ultimately cost tens of thousands of hard-working, blue-collar Americans their jobs.” But Suniva praised the decision. “The president is sending a message that American innovation and manufacturing will not be bullied out of existence without a fight,” the company said in a written statement. SolarWorld CEO Jurgen Stein said in a statement that he was “hopeful [the tariffs] will be enough to address the import surge and to rebuild solar manufacturing in the United States.” Mayer Brownrepresented Suniva and ROKK Solutions handled public affairs for the company. Wiley Rein represented SolarWorld. Full story.
